Negativity Bias and its Impact on the Brain

Negativity bias, a product of our evolutionary history, leads our minds to assign greater significance to negative experiences, emotions, and information compared to positive ones. This bias has various consequences on our well-being and decision-making processes. In the study, Not All Emotions Are Created Equal: The Negativity Bias in Social–Emotional Development, by Vaish et. al, researchers found we remember and are affected by negative events more so than positive.

The Study

This paper delves into the pervasive phenomenon of negativity bias, extensively observed in adults, and examines its presence and implications in early developmental stages. The negativity bias, defined by an inclination to give greater attention and significance to negative information, is explored through the lens of infant emotional development, particularly focusing on social referencing.
