Case Study #LMPD

The social media team was called into HR on Monday morning and continued to tweet and now are beginning to ‘troll’ HR. Language of Gen Z that is used is ‘CHAT.’ Here is the definition before we start.

In Gen Z slang, “chat” is a meta joke that comes from livestream culture (Twitch, YouTube, TikTok Live).

It means “everyone watching” or “the group witnessing this moment.”

People use it like they’re talking to an invisible audience.

Examples:

  • “Chat, is this real?” → “Guys… am I seeing this correctly?”

  • “Chat, I’m cooked.” → “Everyone, I’m done for / this is bad.”

  • “Chat, be honest.” → “Tell me the truth.”

It’s often:

  • Self-aware

  • Dramatic

  • Ironically over-serious

Even when there’s no actual chat.

So yeah — when someone says “chat,” they’re pretending life is a livestream and we’re all watching together. 📺💬
