In an era where layoffs remain an unfortunate reality of organizational life, how leaders approach them makes a critical difference. Far from being a procedural necessity, layoffs can define a company’s long-term culture, brand, and employee trust. When handled without care, they rupture morale, erode performance, and compromise retention. When guided by empathy, they can soften inevitable pain and even strengthen organizational resilience.

The data underscores this: According to Businessolver’s 2025 State of Workplace Empathy Report, organizations that lead with empathy during transitions outperform others in employee satisfaction, loyalty, and resilience. Yet a persistent empathy gap is damaging workplace culture.
