20%.

🎤 BOOK THIS KEYNOTE: The AI Paradox is a highly requested keynote presentation for corporate retreats, HR conferences, and executive summits. Equip your leadership team with the science-backed strategies to protect human wellbeing in an AI-driven world. 📧 alexia@knoxvillehappinesscoalition.com

AI is no longer an experiment. It is infrastructure.

Across industries, organizations are rapidly embedding Artificial Intelligence into their daily workflows to increase speed, precision, and scale. We are automating the mundane, accelerating data analysis, and fundamentally changing how knowledge work gets done.

But this technological revolution has triggered an unexpected psychological crisis.

A recent global study found that employees who use AI daily report higher job satisfaction and greater optimism about their careers. Yet those same workers report up to 20 percent higher stress levels.

This is the paradox leaders must confront.

The Rise of Technostress: Why More Efficiency Equals More Exhaustion

How can a tool designed to make our jobs easier simultaneously make us more stressed?

The answer lies in human psychology and cognitive load. Productivity has accelerated. When output becomes easier, expectations inevitably rise. More efficiency leads to more tasks. More capability leads to more responsibility.

As AI expands our performance capacity, it simultaneously intensifies our psychological load. This phenomenon is known as technostress—the negative psychological link between people and the introduction of new technologies.

In the AI era, technostress manifests in three distinct ways:

The Pace Penalty: Because AI generates work instantly, the human brain is forced to process, review, and make decisions at an unnatural, accelerated pace.

The “Always On” Expectation: If the technology never sleeps, employees feel implicit pressure to match its relentless output.

The Complexity Shift: AI takes away the simple, repetitive tasks that used to give our brains a break. What remains is 100% deep, complex, high-stakes cognitive work—leading to rapid mental fatigue and burnout.

For HR leaders and C-suite executives, this is not a wellness sidebar. It is a talent strategy issue. You cannot build a high-performing, AI-enabled workforce if your people are cognitively depleted.

The Solution: Elevating Talent Performance Through Happiness Habits

In my book, The Future of Work is Human, I argue that the more we automate our operations, the more we must invest in our humanity. You cannot solve technostress with more technology. You solve it with human-centric, science-backed behavioral design.

To safely harness the power of AI without burning out your workforce, organizations must implement Happiness Habits.

Happiness Habits are not toxic positivity or generic wellness advice. They are neuroscience-backed micro-habits—anchored in the Habit Stack Method—designed to protect the brain’s prefrontal cortex, calm the amygdala, and build stress resilience amidst rapid technological change.

When we intentionally design workflows that integrate these habits, we achieve the ultimate goal: elevating talent performance while actively reducing technostress.

How Happiness Habits Counteract AI Stress:

Cognitive Resets: Teaching employees how to insert 60-second micro-breaks (like the Breath Reset or Purpose Pause) between AI-assisted tasks to prevent the accumulation of cortisol.

Reclaiming Autonomy: Using habit stacking to ensure employees feel in control of the technology, rather than feeling driven by the algorithm’s pace.

Fostering Human Connection: As work becomes more automated, intentional habits around gratitude, appreciation, and face-to-face collaboration become the critical glue that maintains team psychological safety.

Bring “The AI Paradox” to Your Organization

We are standing at a critical intersection. Organizations that simply deploy AI without updating their human support systems will face unprecedented burnout and turnover. The organizations that win the future of work will be those that pair artificial intelligence with intentional human wellbeing.

The AI Paradox: Reducing Technostress While Elevating Talent Performance Through Happiness Habits is a dynamic, actionable keynote presentation designed for forward-thinking organizations.

In this session, leaders and teams will learn:

The neuroscience behind technostress and why AI accelerates mental fatigue.

How to identify the hidden signs of cognitive overload in high-performing teams.

The Habit Stack Method: Practical, 2-minute Happiness Habits that build immediate stress resilience.

A strategic framework for HR and executives to align AI adoption with employee wellbeing.

Don’t let the tools meant to empower your workforce become the reason they leave.

<a The Solution Fits in Your Daily Routine.

Here are the numbers that should stop every HR leader, manager, and employee mid-scroll:

55% of the U.S. workforce is currently experiencing burnout — a six-year high.

83% of knowledge workers globally report at least some degree of burnout.

72% of American employees face moderate to very high workplace stress — the highest level recorded in seven years.

Only 25% of workers feel their employer genuinely prioritizes their mental health.

Burnout costs employers between $3,999 and $20,683 per employee per year — with 89% of those costs coming from presenteeism, not absenteeism.

Global employee disengagement costs the world economy $438 billion annually in lost productivity.

48% of U.S. employees have left a job for reasons tied to their mental health.

These are not abstract projections. These are the realities of your workforce right now.

And here’s what the research consistently shows: the organizations that invest in science-backed healthy habits — not just wellness apps, not just annual mental health awareness days, but daily, repeatable micro habits embedded into how people actually work — see measurably better outcomes in engagement, retention, productivity, and human wellbeing.

That’s exactly what the Happiness Habits online class teaches. And it earns you 1 SHRM PDC while you learn.

What Is the Happiness Habits Online Class?

The Happiness Habits class is a self-paced, on-demand online course available through the Knoxville Happiness Coalition Academy — a recognized SHRM Recertification Provider.

This course teaches the Happiness Habits Method — the same framework I deliver as an interactive keynote speaker at SHRM25, SHRM Talent, the Tennessee HR Conference and Expo, the 28th Annual SIOPSA Conference in South Africa, and UPEACE Executive Education in Costa Rica, and the same method I teach as an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee.

The Happiness Habits Method is built on positive psychology, behavioral neuroscience, and habit stacking research. It gives you a practical, repeatable system for building micro habits that protect brain health, strengthen stress resilience, prevent burnout, and improve mental health at work — without requiring more time, more willpower, or more resources.

Who This Course Is For

HR professionals seeking SHRM-CP® or SHRM-SCP® recertification credits

People leaders and managers who want practical tools to support team mental health and reduce burnout

Learning and development professionalsbuilding resilience training into their organizational development strategy

Individual contributors who are personally experiencing stress, anxiety, overwhelm, or burnout and want evidence-based tools that actually work

Organizational development consultantslooking for a science-backed framework to recommend to clients

Anyone who has tried wellness programs, meditation apps, or self-help books and found that nothing sticks

Enroll now →

Why Micro Habits Are the Highest-Leverage Mental Health Intervention

The Problem with Traditional Wellness Programs

Most workplace wellness programs fail. Not because the intention is wrong, but because the design is wrong.

Research shows that only 53% of employees even know how to access mental health resources through their employer. Among those who do, utilization rates remain stubbornly low. The disconnect is not between employer investment and employee need — it’s between how programs are designed and how the human brain actually changes behavior.

Traditional approaches ask people to do something extra: attend a workshop, download an app, schedule a therapy session, meditate for 20 minutes, journal before bed. Each of these requires new time, new motivation, and new cognitive load — the exact resources that are depleted by the stress, burnout, and overwhelm these programs are meant to solve.

This is the fundamental paradox of workplace mental health: the people who need the intervention most have the least capacity to engage with it.

Micro Habits Solve This Problem

Micro habits — sometimes called tiny habits or atomic habits — are small, specific, repeatable behaviors that can be completed in under two minutes and attached to something you already do. They work because they don’t require motivation. They don’t require new time. They don’t require willpower.

They require a cue, a behavior, and a reward — and the Happiness Habits Method teaches you exactly how to build that loop.

The neuroscience behind this is well-established:

The prefrontal cortex — responsible for decision-making, planning, and impulse control — is protected when habits reduce cognitive load. When a positive behavior becomes automatic, it moves from effortful processing to the basal ganglia, freeing up mental bandwidth for higher-order thinking, creativity, and emotional regulation.

The amygdala — the brain’s threat-detection center — is calmed by repeated positive behaviors like gratitude, deep breathing, and social connection. Over time, micro habits reduce the amygdala’s hair-trigger stress reactivity, building what neuroscientists call stress resilience — the brain’s capacity to recover from adversity faster and with less damage.

Dopamine and serotonin — the neurochemicals responsible for motivation, reward, and mood regulation — are triggered by small wins, social bonding, and intentional movement. The Happiness Habits Method is designed to activate these systems multiple times throughout the workday, creating a compounding neurochemical effect.

Neuroplasticity research shows the brain can form new neural pathways in as little as 66 days of consistent practice. That’s one quarter. One performance cycle. One onboarding period.

This is not soft science. This is brain health infrastructure — and it’s what the Happiness Habits class teaches you to build.

Start the course →

What You’ll Learn in the Course

The Happiness Habits online class walks you through the complete Happiness Habits Method— the same framework from my book The Future of Work is Human and the Future of Success is Happiness and my keynote sessions.

Forward this article to your:

Chief People Officer or VP of HR

Learning and Development Director

Employee Wellness Program Manager

SHRM Chapter President

Organizational Development Consultant

Share with your team →

Share

Self-paced. Today, the greatest risks to organizational growth are not operational—they are human.

Leaders are currently navigating an unprecedented landscape: skyrocketing burnout rates, the complexities of managing five generations at work, navigating sensitive behavioral health conversations, and trying to maintain employee engagement in an era of constant change.

You cannot solve these modern, human-centric challenges with outdated management playbooks. Strong leadership starts with wellbeing. When leaders are equipped to foster resilience, engagement, and psychological safety—both in themselves and their teams—productivity and retention naturally follow.

That is why I created the Wellbeing Driven Leadership: Strategic Growth Bundle.

Why Invest in Wellbeing Driven Leadership?

Wellbeing is no longer a soft HR initiative; it is a core business strategy.

This comprehensive bundle equips leaders at all levels—from first-time managers to C-suite executives—with the exact skills required to foster resilience, engagement, and productivity. By directly addressing today’s most pressing workplace challenges, leaders gain practical, science-backed tools that drive both personal and organizational success.

Investing in this bundle means developing stronger, healthier leaders who are capable of cultivating a workforce that truly thrives.

What is Included in the Strategic Growth Bundle?

Available on-demand through the Knoxville Happiness Coalition Academy, this bundle combines four of our most impactful, SHRM-approved courses into one cohesive leadership development journey:

1. Burnout Prevention and Brain Health Techniques

Burnout is an occupational phenomenon that destroys cognitive performance and team morale. This course provides leaders with evidence-based strategies to protect against chronic stress, sustain energy, and maintain long-term brain health and focus.

2. Working with Multigenerational Teams

For the first time, five generations are working side-by-side. This course teaches leaders how to move past stereotypes, close the communication skills gap, and build cohesive, high-performing teams by actively leveraging generational diversity.

3. Addressing Substance Use in the Workplace

Substance use disorder is a health issue that inevitably impacts the workplace. This critical training equips leaders and HR professionals to communicate effectively and empathetically on sensitive issues, balancing compassionate support with organizational policy and safety.

4. Happiness Habits for Enhanced Employee Engagement and Productivity

Happiness is a measurable driver of performance. Using the Habit Stack Method, this course teaches leaders how to boost engagement, job satisfaction, and workplace productivity through proven, neuroscience-backed daily practices.

Transform Your Leadership Strategy Today

The pursuit of sustainable happiness and performance at work requires intentional skill-building. You cannot expect leaders to manage burnout, generational conflict, and sensitive health issues by intuition alone. Give them the tools they need to succeed.

Whether you are an HR director looking for a comprehensive training solution for your management team, or an individual leader committed to your own strategic growth, this bundle delivers immediate, actionable value.

Ready to invest in stronger, healthier leadership?

Enroll in the Wellbeing Driven Leadership: Strategic Growth Bundle today.

Share

Self-paced. But without the right leadership and communication skills, they inevitably collide.

What shows up on performance reviews as “attitude problems,” “lack of engagement,” or “poor communication” is often something much simpler—and highly solvable: We were never taught how to work effectively across generations.

Generational Tension Isn’t a Personality Issue. It’s a Skills Gap.

Most professionals are expected to navigate complex multigenerational dynamics by intuition alone. The result of this guesswork is costly for organizational culture and productivity:

Miscommunication that quickly escalates into unnecessary conflict.

Assumptions about motivation that completely miss the mark (e.g., trying to motivate a Gen Z employee with the same incentives that worked for a Boomer).

Leaders struggling to engage their teams consistently across different age demographics.

High performers feeling misunderstood, micromanaged, or overlooked.

Because generational differences are often treated as “common sense” or reduced to internet memes, they are rarely addressed with the same seriousness as other critical leadership skills.

That is a costly mistake for any organization that wants to retain top talent and maintain high employee engagement.

Introducing: Working with Multigenerational Teams

Organizations that thrive in the future of work won’t be the ones that ignore generational differences—or joke about them—but the ones that actively build the skills to work across them.

Working with Multigenerational Teams is a practical, skills-focused course designed to help professionals collaborate more effectively across age groups. No stereotypes, no eye-rolling, and no forced team-building exercises.

Available on-demand through the Knoxville Happiness Coalition Academy, this course goes beyond labels to explore how generational experiences shape communication styles, motivation, leadership expectations, and teamwork in real, everyday workplace situations.

What You Will Actually Learn

Through real-world examples and actionable strategies, this course equips you to:

Understand the Drivers: Learn how generational differences fundamentally influence communication styles and decision-making processes.

Adapt Your Leadership: Master the ability to adjust your leadership and feedback approach to motivate across all age groups effectively.

Resolve Conflict: Navigate common multigenerational conflict scenarios with confidence and emotional intelligence.

Strengthen Collaboration: Build high-performing teams where differences become strategic strengths, without asking anyone to “change who they are.”

The goal isn’t forced harmony at all costs. It is clarity, respect, and operational effectiveness.

Start the Course Now →

Who This Course Is For

Whether you are trying to bridge the gap between a Gen Z new hire and a Gen X manager, or you are an HR leader looking to reduce friction across your entire organization, this course delivers immediate value. It is specifically designed for:

Managers and Team Leaders navigating diverse, multi-age teams.

HR Professionals supporting engagement, retention, and performance (and seeking SHRM recertification credits).

Individual Contributors who want to communicate more effectively with colleagues and leadership.

Anyone working in a modern organization who is tired of generational friction getting in the way of good work.

The Bottom Line for the Future of Work

Multigenerational teams aren’t a passing trend. They are the permanent reality of work today.

Working with Multigenerational Teams gives you the exact skills you need to lead, communicate, and collaborate with confidence in the workplace we actually have—not the one we wish we had.

Ready to close the skills gap and earn your SHRM PDC?

Start the Course Now →

Share with your teams to enhance work culture.

Share

Self-paced. People assumed it meant being the loudest voice in the room, having a specific extroverted personality, or simply dressing a certain way.

But true executive presence is not a personality type. It is a highly learnable set of behaviors.

Whether you are an individual contributor trying to get your ideas heard, a mid-level manager aiming for the C-suite, or an HR leader tasked with developing high-potential talent, influence is the critical accelerator of your career. It is the difference between having a great idea and actually getting the alignment and momentum needed to execute it.

If you have ever felt passed over for an opportunity, struggled to command a room, or found it difficult to drive results across cross-functional teams, the missing link is likely executive presence.

The Three Pillars: Confidence, Communication, and Character

Executive presence is not about changing who you are; it is about optimizing how you show up. It breaks down into three foundational pillars that manifest in everyday leadership moments:

Confidence: How you carry yourself under pressure, how you handle ambiguity, and how you project competence even when you don’t have all the answers.

Communication: How clearly and concisely you articulate your vision. It is the ability to read a room, speak with conviction, and listen with intent.

Character: The authenticity, integrity, and emotional intelligence that build deep, lasting trust with stakeholders.

When these three pillars align, you create a gravitational pull. People listen when you speak. Stakeholders trust your judgment. You stop pushing for compliance and start generating genuine commitment.

Introducing: Executive Presence: Mastering Leadership and Influence

To help professionals demystify this critical skill set, I have developed a targeted, one-hour online class: Executive Presence: Mastering Leadership and Influence.

Available on-demand through the Knoxville Happiness Coalition Academy, this course strips away the corporate jargon and provides practical, realistic strategies you can start using immediately to strengthen how you speak, show up, and make decisions.

What You Will Learn (Course Objectives)

This isn’t theory. It is a tactical playbook for modern leadership. In this session, you will learn how to:

Understand the Foundation: Learn what Executive Presence actually is by breaking it down into confidence, communication, and character, and discover how these show up in everyday workplace interactions.

Put it into Practice: Apply realistic, actionable strategies to strengthen your verbal and non-verbal communication, improve your meeting presence, and sharpen your decision-making skills.

Understand Why it Matters: See exactly how influence drives opportunity, trust, and momentum in your career. Learn why executive presence is not a “bonus skill,” but a critical career accelerator.

Lead Without the Title: Master proven techniques to influence outcomes, align diverse stakeholders, and drive business results—even when formal authority isn’t yours.

Start the Course Now →

The Art of Leading Without Authority

Perhaps the most valuable module in this course addresses the most common challenge in modern, matrixed organizations: leading without formal authority.

Today’s work happens across departments, time zones, and reporting lines. You will frequently need to lead projects where the people doing the work do not report to you. If your only leadership tool is a formal title, you will fail to gain traction.

This course teaches you how to leverage executive presence to build consensus, navigate workplace politics ethically, and inspire action through influence rather than mandates.

Who Should Take This Course?

Emerging Leaders & High-Potentials:Accelerate your readiness for senior roles by mastering the soft skills that drive hard results.

Project Managers & Cross-Functional Leaders: Learn how to align stakeholders and drive outcomes when you don’t have direct reporting authority.

HR & Talent Development Professionals:Earn 1 SHRM PDC while evaluating a proven framework to use for your organization’s leadership development programs.

Anyone looking to increase their impact, be heard in critical meetings, and build deeper professional trust.

Step Into Your Influence

You do not have to wait for a promotion to start leading. Leadership is a behavior, not a title. By intentionally building your executive presence, you take control of your career trajectory and your daily impact.

Ready to build real influence and earn your SHRM PDC?

Enroll in Executive Presence: Mastering Leadership and Influence today.

Share with your teams!

Share

Self-paced. For HR professionals and organizational leaders, navigating this reality can feel like walking a tightrope between compassion, policy, and performance.

Many leaders want to do the right thing when they suspect an employee is struggling. But the fear of overstepping, saying the wrong thing, or violating privacy laws often leads to hesitation. Unsure of where to start or what is appropriate to do, organizations frequently default to silence until a crisis forces their hand.

It is time to change that approach.

Moving Past Stigma: Substance Use as a Health Issue

Addressing Substance Use in the Workplace: A Comprehensive Guide for Human Resources is designed to make that uncertainty easier to navigate.

This course treats substance use disorder (SUD) as exactly what it is: a health issue that can affect anyone, at any level, in any organization. Instead of focusing on fear, stigma, or immediate discipline, we focus on understanding, responsibility, and practical action.

The goal of this training is not to turn HR professionals into clinicians or therapists. Rather, it is to give you the clarity and confidence to respond thoughtfully and lawfully when concerns arise.

When handled well, support and accountability are not opposites—they reinforce each other.

What You Will Learn in This Course

Available on-demand through the Knoxville Happiness Coalition Academy, this comprehensive session equips HR leaders and managers with the tools to handle complex situations with dignity and professionalism.

In this course, you will learn how to:

Recognize the Signs: Understand how substance use impacts the workplace and learn to identify early warning signs in performance and behavior without making medical assumptions or diagnoses.

Lead Difficult Conversations: Master the framework for initiating conversations that are respectful, effective, and focused on performance and safety.

Navigate Policy and Law: Gain clarity on workplace policies, reasonable accommodations, and professional boundaries to ensure your organization remains compliant and supportive.

Balance Support and Accountability: Learn how to hold the line on performance standards while offering compassionate pathways to help and recovery.

Start the Course Now →

Why This Training is Critical for HR Leaders

Addressing substance use at work is not about “fixing” people. It is about creating a workplace where safety, dignity, and performance can coexist.

When HR professionals are equipped with the right skills, they can intervene earlier, reduce organizational risk, and potentially save careers—and lives. Because this topic is so vital to modern human resources management, this course is approved for 2 Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for SHRM-CP® or SHRM-SCP® recertification.

Lead with Informed Compassion

You do not have to navigate the complexities of workplace substance use alone or by intuition. This course invites HR leaders to move past stigma and silence and toward informed, humane leadership that truly supports both employees and the organization.

Ready to build your confidence and earn 2 SHRM PDC

ENROLL TODAY

Self-paced. Complete this one-hour session on-demand. Enroll here.

We need to change how we talk about burnout. For too long, it has been treated as a personal failing—a sign that an employee just couldn’t “hack it” or needed to practice better self-care on the weekends.

But the science, and the highest authorities in global health, tell a completely different story.

The World Health Organization (WHO) officially classifies burnout not as a medical condition, but as an occupational phenomenon. It is explicitly defined as a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

While we often see alarming statistics—with major workplace reports consistently showing that over half of the global workforce experiences moderate to severe burnout—the sheer volume of data can sometimes numb us to the reality. The bottom line is simple: burnout is the defining occupational hazard of the modern era, leading directly to reduced productivity, chronic stress, and profound mental fatigue.

To solve it, we must stop treating the symptoms and start protecting the system most impacted by chronic stress: your brain.

The Brain Health Crisis Hiding in Plain Sight

When we talk about “mental fatigue” or “brain fog,” we aren’t just using metaphors. We are describing physical changes in the brain caused by prolonged exposure to stress hormones like cortisol.

Chronic workplace stress fundamentally alters cognitive performance. It impairs the prefrontal cortex (the area of the brain responsible for executive function, focus, and complex problem-solving) while hyper-activating the amygdala (the brain’s threat-detection center).

This neurological shift explains why, when you are burned out, simple tasks feel insurmountable. Your brain is literally reallocating its energy away from deep, productive thought and into basic survival mode. You aren’t losing your edge; your brain is just exhausted from managing unmitigated stress.

This is why generic wellness advice like “take a bubble bath” fails to move the needle on burnout. To restore cognitive performance and build true resilience, you need evidence-based, neuro-protective strategies that you can integrate directly into your workday.

The Solution: 10 Evidence-Based Strategies for Burnout Prevention

You don’t need to quit your job or take a month-long sabbatical to protect your brain health.
